If you are concerned about microbes in the home air, you will want to check this list with best air purifiers with UV light that have this extra feature apart from the usual filters that clean the room air.
It would be appropriate to call these devices air sanitizers, and some manufacturers use this word in their names. So what you have here are devices that i) clean the air in the usual way through HEPA or some other type of filters, ii) most of them also have activated carbon module, and iii) the UVC part is yet another level of purification.
The focus of this text is on the UV air purifiers but you will see the therm HEPA filter frequently used throughout the text, this is simply because most of them come with such a filter. So this is an abbreviation from the words ‘high-efficiency particulate absorbing’ and more about this is available on Wikipedia.
How Do UV Air Purifiers Work?
This issue is discussed in detail in my separate text, so here just to stress that such air purifiers have a module or section with the body where air or water are exposed to UV-C light. I mentioned air or water, so just to know that:
- some sanitize air that passes through them, and
- some are designed to sanitize the water that is transformed into vapor.
This UVC, or UV-C as it is sometimes abbreviated, is a particular UV wavelength range around 265 nm that has a harmful effect on germs. It affects their DNA in such a way that they cannot replicate, and this makes them harmless. This technology definitely works, and it has been around for over a century. But it is far from certain that all devices on the market really work as the manufacturers claim.
Note also that UVC light is very dangerous for humans and make sure that you never look at the source of the UVC light, and never expose any part of the body to such radiation.
Yet another detail that is frequently overlooked is that UVC light affects oxygen from the air and its molecules can forms in the shape of ozone, so with three atoms instead of the usual two. But ozone is also a dangerous gas and should be avoided in larger amounts.
So here below is our list with best UVC air purifiers, please keep reading.
Airthereal APH260 Air Purifier for Home Large Room and Office
This purifier is here because of its UV light feature, but it includes almost everything you would want to have in an air purifier for home use.
So it comes with a pre-filter that removes larger particles. Next is its True HEPA filter that removes 99.97% of fine particles as small as 0.3 microns.
An activated carbon filter is there as well to remove odors. Here you have Nano Mineral, Cold Catalyst Filter, Photo Catalyst Filter, and Molecular Sieve.
Then there is the mentioned UV light chamber where the air is exposed to the light and this makes all germs in the air harmless.
Finally, there is an ionizer area, and such cleaned and ionized air leaves the device. All these stages are presented in the picture below.
It is equipped with PM2.5 sensors and air quality indicators, and it keeps you updated with the current air quality status. You also have an indicator when to replace the filter.
It is CADR rated 152+CFM (260 m³/h). In practical terms, this means that it can purify an area up to 355 square feet (33 m²).
Germ Guardian Air Purifier True HEPA Filter AC4300BPTCA
This is one of the best-known devices in this category and it is among the most popular air purifiers on Amazon. You have several levels of filtration and purification here and those include:
- Pre-filter with activated carbon. So here larger pollutants are removed from the air, and in addition, the carbon reduces odors from pets, smoke, etc.
- HEPA filter mentioned in the name of the device. This is an electrostatic HEPA air filter that captures dust, pollen, pet dander, mold spores, and other allergens.
- UVC module. They claim it reduces up to 99.97% of harmful germs and this goes to the scales as small as 0.3 microns.
This device offers three different speed settings and its capacity is such that it purifies rooms up to 153 square feet (14 m²) so that the whole air is forced through the filter 4 times per hour.
This purifier comes with a 3-year warranty, and it is also an AHAM verified product. This all should put your mind at rest when you order such a product.
Note that this brand has yet another Germ Guardian WiFi Bluetooth Smart Voice Control Air Purifier for Home, and its name tells you about the advanced technology integrated in it.
Honeywell HCM350B Germ-Free Cool Mist Humidifier
This Honeywell HCM350B Germ-Free Cool Mist Humidifier is a medium-size 1-gallon evaporative-type device with UV technology that kills germs in the water.
This means you have 2-in-1 systems here and this puts it in the groups of air humidifiers and air purifiers.
Regarding the water tank size, as mentioned above this is a device for smaller to medium size rooms, and it can run up to 24 hours with one fill.
The picture below shows how this device works. So the water from the tank passes through an area where it is illuminated by the UV light, and this is supposed to kill 99.9% of bacteria and other germs in the water.
So this is the UV technology of a particular type mentioned in the introduction above, i.e., here the water is purified, and only sterilized vapor leaves the device.
The purified water is then absorbed by a filter and with the help of a fan, the vapor spreads in the air. So yes, you have a filter here and it is necessary to replace it occasionally. But see this from the good side:
- You can use tap water in this system, so there are no expenses for distilled water.
- With this system you are safe from what people call white dust. Eventual minerals in the water are absorbed by the wicking filter.
- Above all, as mentioned above, here you have two devices in one, and the price is simply incredible.
They claim that with such a system you cannot over-humidify because air can contain only a certain level of such cool moisture. Having such a system acting in the room improves breathing comfort, sleeping, nasal congestion, and it also helps with a dry skin. It is also known that extra moisture reduces static electricity which you have probably experienced at home.
Other features include three output levels, basically, this is related to the fan speed levels, and also to the noise level. They also suggest not to use essential oils because the oils can damage the humidifier and void the warranty.
According to their statements, they used tap water and the testing on microbial reduction rate gave the following results after 2 hours of continuous exposure to the ultraviolet light in the humidifier:
- Bacteria: Escherichia Coli 99.9%.
- Mold: Aspergillus niger 99.9%.
- Fungus: Penicillium Citrinum 99.9%.
- Virus: MS2 99.9%.
These are remarkable results, you can see more in their manual. Please see a bit more in this short video:
So as you realize, this Honeywell HCM350B Germ-Free Cool Mist Humidifier acts as an air purifier of a particular type, you have two devices in one, and you can see its price in the link below. This is a product with the price/value combination that is hard to match.

Here you have a powerful machine that can purify the air in rooms up to 3700 ft² (344 m²).
As you realize from the name, this device includes quite a number of functions:
- The air is directed first to a HEPA Air Purifier.
- After that it passed through a filter with activated carbon. This removes contaminants and impurities via a unique chemical absorption process.
- Then it goes through a photocatalytic filter. This helps in destroying microorganisms and also in reducing odors.
- The air is then exposed to UVC light.
- It passed through a section where negative ions are created.
- Finally, there are three ozone generating plates. This emits mood-boosting ozone to further disinfect, cleanse and freshen the air.
All these elements are schematically presented in the picture below:
You can see all the elements mentioned above in this short video, please have a look:

This TruSens Air Purifier is an elegant construction with an equally interesting inner structure shown in the picture below.
Note that they build it in three different sizes, small, medium, and large that correspond to the room size of 250, 375, 750 square feet (23, 35, and 70 m²).
So you have a 4-in-1 configuration in the shape of a cylinder. The outer part is a washable pre-filter that captures larger particles. Then follows the activated carbon filter with the usual function of reducing odors and refreshing the air.
Next in the filtration is a HEPA filter, and in the center you have an UV light source for sterilization.
This device actively monitors the air quality of the room and takes action. There is a SensorPod (shown in the picture) that you place anywhere in the room, it communicates back to the TruSens purifier so it can automatically adjust its fan speed. So you have nothing to do, you will just be benefiting from cleaner air.
The picture below shows the mentioned 4 stages in the purification:
