If you want an air purifier with some extra feature that improves the purification process, this list with best air purifiers with ionizers is the text to read. Here you have multi-functional electronic devices with some smart technology.
What this is about
So here you have multifunctional air purifiers with several filtration stages, and one addition common for all of them is that one of these stages includes an air ionizer section.
The purpose of creating ions is that they bond with pollutants and in that way, they become heavier and can be removed from the air, or they become electrically charged and then collected by the filter. Note that some also create ozone, but this function should be used with care because ozone is harmful in larger quantities.
Most of the time these devices produce negative ions, so they have some extra electrons, conferring a net negative charge to the particle. So when air with such ions passes through an electrostatically positively charged collector, they are attracted and this is one way of removing from the air.
The National Health Service (NHS) researched the effectiveness of anions for air purification, and they confirmed that airborne infections were eliminated by the installation of negative air ionizers. As it follows from some other studies, there are no evidence of the detrimental effects of such ions in the air.
Here is our list with best air purifiers ionizers ordered alphabetically, so this is not a ranking.
AeraMax 100 Air Purifier

As you realize from the picture, this AeraMax 100 Air Purifier is designed as a freestanding floor device, narrow and elegant, and it does not take much floor space.
The capacity of this purifier is in the range 100-200 ft² (9-19 m²), so this is a purifier for smaller rooms.
It offers a 4-stage filtration presented in the picture below. Those include:
- an activated carbon filter that removes odors and captures large airborne particles,
- a True HEPA filter,
- then there is something they call Antimicrobial Treatment, and
- finally, an ionizer which is behind the reasons of having this device here in the list.
They claim that this all removes 99.995 percent of airborne particles. This includes pollen and other allergens, viruses, germs, dust mites, mold spores, and also cigarette smoke.
This device is equipped with AeraSmart Sensor designed to monitor the air quality and automatically adjusts the fan speed to keep the air clean. You will want to know that this all is an ultra-quiet performance.

Please see how to replace its filter:
Airthereal APH260 Air Purifier for Home Large Room and Office

This purifier includes almost everything you would want to have in an air purifier for home use. You will see the picture below what this all implies.
So you have the usual pre-filter that removes larger particles. Next in the line is the True HEPA filter that removes 99.97% of fine particles as small as 0.3 microns.
An activated carbon filter is there as well to remove odors. Here you have Nano Mineral, Cold Catalyst Filter, Photo Catalyst Filter, and Molecular Sieve.
But then you have a UV light chamber where the air is exposed to the light and this makes all germs in the air harmless.
Finally, you have an ionizer area, and such cleaned and ionized air leaves the device.
It is equipped with PM2.5 sensors and air quality indicators, and it keeps you updated with the current air quality status. You also have an indicator when to replace the filter.
It is CADR rated 152+CFM (260 m³/h). In practical terms, this means that it can purify an area up to 355 square feet (33 m²).

This purifier is both CARB Certified (EO: G-18-110) and ETL Certified (No.5012499). Please see a bit more about its features in this short video:
Hathaspace Smart True HEPA Air Purifier

This device has the description 5-in-1 in its name. This is about its 5 stages in the air filtration process.
• You have a Cold Catalyst Filter that removes larger particles like dust and pet dander, as well as toxic household chemicals like formaldehyde, ammonia, and benzene.
• There is also what they call the Cellular Activated Carbon Filter. This is in place here to absorb and remove smoke, odors, gases, and volatile organic compounds (VOC’s).
• You have an Antibacterial Filter that specifically targets germs and bacteria.
• Then there is a True HEPA Filter that as usual removes 99.97% of airborne pollutants as small as 0.3 microns. This included dust mites, allergens, pollen, pet dander, and mold spores.
• But the reason for having this device here in the list is its Ionizer that releases negative ions (anions). Those electrically charge air particles and odors, and this is supposed to making them easier to trap. This feature can be turned off, and it is ozone free.
All these stages are schematically presented in this picture:

They claim that the device is able to completely filter the air in a 350 ft² (32.5 m²) room up to 48 times per day. So it is good enough for medium to larger rooms. The point is that it can clean the air even in much larger rooms, but this will only mean that the number 48 mentioned above will be reduced. If it is 36 this means 3 times per hour all the air will pass through the filter so this is still perfectly fine.
The word Smart in the name describes the fact that it detects the air quality automatically and you will have a light indicator changing its color. This will also change the speed of the fan and as a result, the air quality will be improved. You can see more in this users’ guide.
I think you would want to see this video which shows how impressive this device is in work:
Holmes Small Room 3-Speed HEPA Air Purifier with Optional Ionizer

This is a small device suitable for use on a tabletop. It can be positioned horizontally as in the picture, and also vertically. This is a purifier for smaller rooms, the recommended room area is up to 109 ft² (10 m²).
You can choose from 3 fan speeds to keep air fresh. It comes with a True HEPA filter, and in the video below you will see how effectively it is able to clean the air. It will trap 99% of typical airborne particles.
The integrated activated carbon filter removes odors from the air. You can access filters through a pop-off cover. Smoke CADR rating 70.
But it is here because of its optional ionizer that naturally improves the performance of the air purifier while freshening the air.
This device comes with a 3-year limited warranty. Here is a smoke chamber demonstration with this air purifier in action, please have a look:
Ivation 5-in-1 HEPA Air Purifier & Ozone Generator, Ionizer & Deodorizer

This is yet another 5-in-1 device and a powerful machine that can purify the air in rooms up to 3700 ft² (344 m²).
But see what this device included and its numerous functions:
- You have a true HEPA Air Purifier with the usual functions. You should know that the same features apply to all HEPA filters.
- After that the air passes through a filter with activated carbon and this removes contaminants and impurities via a unique chemical absorption process.
- Then there is something called the photocatalytic filter. This helps in destroying microorganisms and also in reducing odors.
- The air is then exposed to UVC light that should make microbes harmless.
- The reason for having this device here is a section where negative ions are created.
- Finally, there are three ozone generating plates. You can disable them as you wish.
So it is 6-in-1 and it is not completely clear why they describe it as 5-in-1, but the title above is its official name. Anyhow, all these elements are schematically presented in the picture:

You can see all the elements mentioned above in this short video, please have a look:
IVETTO Ionizer Ozone Generator O3 Air Purifier Deodorization Sterilizer for Room Office Bedroom and Toilet

This is a relatively small device that can be installed on the wall or used on a tabletop. As its name suggests, it is designed to generate both ozone and negative ions in large quantities.
This IVETTO Ionizer Ozone Generator is with the official capacity of 166 ft² (15 m²), so this is for smaller to medium size rooms. All its functions are aimed at efficiently eliminating smells like smoke, cooking smell, must, toilet smell as well as other airborne odors.
You will see its pictures with a baby sleeping close to it, so it is better to disregard such a use. No device that creates ozone should be used for such a purpose. With such pictures, they wanted to show that the device is quiet, but the picture of this type is certainly wrong.
It has auto and manual mode, and the former has a motion sensor that will activate and deactivate the device.
SilverOnyx Air Purifier for Home with True HEPA Filter

This purifier has the capacity to clean air in a room of up to 500 square feet (46 m²). It comes with an air quality monitor, and it has five stages of air filtration. Airflow is automatically adjusted due to a PM2.5 (particulate matter) sensor.
So apart from the usual pre-filter for larger particles like hair and pet dander, there is the True HEPA H13 filter that captures 99.97% of dust and allergens up to 0.3 microns in size. Then you have an active carbon filter to absorb odors, a UV light that helps destroy contaminants like mold and germs, and an ion generator. which is the reason for having this device here in the list.
The controls are on the top, visible in the picture shown here. Hou have a display that shows the variable 5-speed fan, and controls for the built-in ionizer and UV-C light, plus sleep mode and on/off timer, etc.
Please see more in the video:
Winix 5300-2 Air Purifier with True HEPA, PlasmaWave and Odor Reducing Carbon Filter

As the name of this purifier tells you, it comes with a True HEPA filter. But this is a part of its design that is more or less standard for most of these purifiers. The thing that sets it apart is its PlasmaWave section that is supposed to improve air quality even more.
As a user, you cannot really check what this ionizer is doing so you have to rely on its specifications and on what the manufacturer claims. It is important to know that there is no ozone created here.
But this is a very quiet device, and this holds for all five of its ventilation levels. This is partly due to its Smart Sensor and Auto Mode that adjusts the fan to filter the air as needed.
So when you hear it working a bit louder this means the air is more polluted. This is usually when you start it for the first time at home. After that, it will keep the air clean by constantly forcing it through the filter and cleaning it. As a result, it will work on a very quiet mode.
It is supposed to capture 99.97% of airborne pollutants. This includes dust mites, pet dander, pollen, and everything down to the size of 0.3 microns.
There are 3 stages in this air cleaning and they are presented in the picture below. Note that this is quite a large device with the dimensions 14.9 x 7.8 x 23.6 inches, so it is most suitable for the floor use. It is also a bit heavy with its 17.66 pounds.

This device is AHAM CADR rated for 360 ft² (33 m²) so it is suitable for medium and large rooms. This CADR means Clean Air Delivery Rate and AHAM means Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers. Please see more in this video review:
